Pause in YSMHL League Play
Submitted By Joanne Rey-Reiter on Tuesday, December 14, 2021
This is probably coming as no surprise given the number of associations already requesting action be taken, and/or who are taking action themselves.

The YSMHL executive have voted and the following precautions will take effect immediately: In response to the growing number of teams in isolation, and the spread of the new variant across all age ranges, YSMHL is suspending all league play from end-of-day December 14th until December 23rd (at which point our regular season break is in effect).   This applies to all MD, AE, A, and AA games.

Timing is critical, hence our decision to pause programming now.  By taking this pause now:

  • all players (and their families) on isolation will be done isolation  by Christmas
  • all teams on isolation will be done isolation and be able to participate in tournaments between Christmas and New Years.
  • will be able to restart the season in January in much better shape (all teams in isolation will be done)
  • no further teams will be at risk of being put on isolation through hockey

YMSHL has limited scope-of-control, being only able to speak to MD/AE/A/AA games.   YSMHL does not govern Tournaments, House league, Local League, Select, Clinics, or practices.  Each association should carefully consider these areas themselves and determine what programming it wants to continue / pause.   Several other centres across Ontario have already shut down, or enacted restrictions already due to safety concerns.

This has been a very difficult decision which we recognize takes away one of the very few activities our players have that seem normal.   It is our belief that this 10 day pause will affect “a reset” effectively allowing hockey to resume with the maximum number of players and teams in the new year.

Eric Kopsala
YSMHL President

Further to the YSMHL message, due to the number of positive Covid 19 cases and close contact issues in the Aurora MHA, we have opted to be cautious and further protect our players and coaches along with their families by also pausing House league, Select and all team practices.

President
