U16 BB Tryouts
Welcome to the U16 BB Aurora Tigers Tryouts!

My name is Ryan Geary and I am the head coach for the team this year. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to attend these tryouts. This team just completed a successful season which included winning the YSMHL championship and playing in the OMHA weekend. We are looking to continue that success next season. I wish every player a successful tryout and the best of luck!

TEAM STAFF:

A component of the success of this team last year can be attributed to our incredible team staff. As such, Steve Marshall will be returning as an assistant coach for the 2025/26 season. I will also be looking for the following parent positions to fill-out the staff:

o   2 additional assistant coaches

o   1 practice coach

o   Team Manager

o   Team trainer (A platoon of 2-3 would be ideal)

o   Treasurer

o   Social team

TRYOUT EXPECTATIONS:

The success of this past season can be attributed to the camaraderie in our dressing room.  I am looking for players that want to play, learn and grow with their teammates. I stress appropriate behaviour at the rink and on the ice as these players represent Aurora and the Tigers. Additionally, I will be looking at the following during the tryouts:

·       Skating

·       Coachability

·       Passing

·       Effort

·       Positive Attitude

·       Hockey Sense

·       Shooting

·       Intensity

·       Team Mentality

TRYOUT SCHEDULE:

Tryout #1 = Saturday May 10, 2025 – ACC #1 (Ford) – 4:00pm to 5:30pm

Tryout #2 = Wednesday May 14, 2025 – ACC #2 (Lincoln) – 6:15pm – Game vs South Simcoe Storm

Tryout #3 = Thursday May 15, 2025 – ACC #1 (Lincoln) – 8:30pm – 10:00pm

TRYOUT PROCESS:

The first and third tryouts will consist of a variety of drills and scrimmage time. The second tryout will feature a home game vs the South Simcoe Storm

You must purchase a tryout passport prior to attending the first tryout. These cannot be purchased at the arena prior to the tryout. Passports can be purchased here . For additional tryout information from the AMHA please click here. Additionally, if you have any questions feel free to email me. ([email protected])

You will see your child’s passport number on the U16 BB – Tryout Player List page on the website. If the number is not there, please contact the AMHA.

Please arrive 45 minutes before tryouts begin.

When you arrive at the lobby of the ACC rink #2, please go to the AMHA table to sign-in and receive your child’s tryout jersey. THIS JERSEY MUST BE RETURNED AT THE END OF EACH TRYOUT. It does not go home.

Full protective gear is mandatory, including neck and mouth guards players without, or missing such equipment, will NOT be allowed on the ice.

You MUST attend the first tryout to be invited back to the second or third tryout. If for whatever reason you are unable to attend, please email me to discuss. Please note, the AMHA has lifted the guaranteed 3rd tryout protocol for incumbents as well as the one up rule.

There will be a team of INDEPENDENT evaluators, with no association to the U16 age players, who will be assisting me with assessing and evaluating the players. I will be using the full panel of evaluators to make decisions about which players will make the team. All of these evaluators have experience of coaching and playing hockey. I am also bringing in goalie experts to conduct evaluations of the goalies.

The AMHA will also assign a team of independent evaluators.

During and after the tryout, please do NOT approach the evaluators, as they have a job to do.

Communication of my decisions after each tryout will occur via the website and NOT in person. Your player’s passport submission ID number is the code that identifies them on the website (look at the U16 BB website for the team and the tryout page).

·       After the 1st tryout, results will be posted after 8pm on May 10th

·       After the 2nd tryout, results will be posted after 10pm on May 14th

·       After the 3rd tryout, results will be posted after 5pm on May 16th

I am aware that some players (and/or their parents) may experience anxiety during this process. PLEASE kindly reinforce with your child that they perform at their best when feeling relaxed and confident. It is also important for parents to help manage their child’s expectations during this process. A roster position on this team should never be assumed. The process is designed to pick the top players and goalies for team success.

A meeting for the parents of the players selected to the team will be scheduled shortly after the tryouts have concluded. Additionally, our team apparel fitting has been scheduled for Monday, May 26th at 6:00 pm at Lions Share in Newmarket.

TEAM EXPECTATIONS:

·       There will be a financial commitment from each family. The estimated financial commitment will be approximately $3,500 to 4,000. We will be looking for sponsorships and fundraising to help reduce the cost per family.

·       There will also be a time commitment required of each family. We will be on the ice 3 to 4 times per week with practices and games. It is expected that all players attend all practices and games.

·       In past years the Playoffs have run through March Break. Please plan on the team playing through March Break and plan your vacations accordingly.

·       We will be attending approx. 3 to 4 tournaments with 2 being away tournaments

·       All decisions about player positions are at the discretion of the coach and will most likely change during the season based on the needs of the team.

If you have questions, please email me. If you have a concern, please respect the OMHA protocol of waiting 24 hours to contact the coach. Please contact me via email after this time. If I receive an email before this time, I will respond when the 24 hour wait period has expired. THANK YOU and I look forward to seeing you at the rink.
