Welcome to the 2022-2023 U14 MD Tryouts
Hello Parents and Players,

My name is Mike Charendoff and I am excited to be the Head Coach of the Aurora Tigers 2022/2023 U14 MD team.  Below you will find information related to the upcoming season including the tryout process, schedule, and evaluation criteria.

TRYOUT SCHEDULE

  • Tryout #1         Mon May 16   6:15pm – 7:45pm    ACC2
  • Tryout #2         Wed May 18   7:00pm – 8:30pm    ACC2
  • Tryout #3         Thu May 19    6:00pm – 7:30pm    ACC2

The first two tryouts will consist of a variety of hockey drills and scrimmage time, whereas the last session will be an exhibition game against the Barrie Colts.

TRYOUT PROCESS

1. You must pre-register your child online (on the AMHA website) for the upcoming season and purchase a Tryout Passport.

2. Please arrive at least 45-minutes before Tryouts #1 and #2 and 60-minutes prior to Tryout #3.

3. When you arrive, please go to the AMHA sign-in table located in the main lobby outside ACC2.  You will be given a tryout jersey for use that day.  Please note that THIS JERSEY MUST BE RETURNED AT THE END OF EACH TRYOUT SESSION.  It does not go home.

4. Full protective gear is mandatory, including neck and mouth guards.  Players without such equipment will not be allowed on the ice.

5. You must attend the first tryout to be invited back to the second and third tryouts.

6. To ensure fairness and impartiality, there will be a team of independent evaluators who will be assisting me with player assessment, including representatives from the AMHA.

7. During and after the tryout, please do NOT approach the evaluators, as they are focused on the task at hand.

8. After each tryout, decisions will be communicated via the U14 MD team website and not in person at the arena.  Your child’s passport submission ID number is the code that identifies your player on the website.  On the team site please refer to the U14 MD Menu / Tryout Player List to look for your child’s ID number after results are posted.

RESULTS

Player ID numbers will be posted for those advancing to the next round of tryouts by these times.

  • Tryout #1    Results posted the same day, after 10:00pm
  • Tryout #2    Results posted the same day, after 10:00pm
  • Tryout #3    Results posted the following day, after 6:00pm

I am aware that some players (and/or Parents) may experience stress and anxiety during the tryout process.  Please kindly reinforce with your player that they perform at their best when feeling relaxed and confident.  It is important for parents to help manage their child’s expectations during this process.  A rostered position on this team should never be assumed, it has to be earned!  Let’s all try to make this process an enjoyable one!

TRYOUT EXPECTATIONS

Several INDEPENDENT and experienced coaches will act as evaluators during the tryout process, as well as the on-ice instructors.  Their opinions, together with my own, plus the independent AMHA evaluators will select the 2022/2023 U14 MD team.  Please do not approach the evaluators, all questions should be directed to me through the U14MD website email link.

Please know that this feedback gathered will be used to help select the 15 players and 2 goalies for the Team.  Many factors will be considered in this decision-making process including the following:

1.    Skating

2.    Puck Handling

3.    Shooting

4.    Coachability

5.    Battling

6.    Hockey IQ

7.    Attentiveness

8.    Team Play

9.    Attitude

In addition to this, I would also add that I am a firm believer that a players “will” is just as important as a players skill!

TEAM EXPECTATIONS

Before committing, please take the following into consideration.

  • The financial commitment for each player is estimated to be between $2,000 - $2,500, although we will be looking for sponsorships to help offset these costs.
  • A significant time commitment will be required.  On average we will be on the ice 3-4 times per week and Players are expected to attend all practices and games.
  • We will be attending approximately 2-3 tournaments, of which at least 1 will be an away tournament that would involve an additional cost per family.  We hope to secure the CAN/AM tournament in Lake Placid, USA this year.
  • I will be looking for volunteers to fill the following roles:

2 Assistant Coaches, Goalie Coach, Team Trainer, Team Manager, Treasurer, On-Ice Helpers, Team Videographer, and a Dryland Training Coach

  • All decisions about player positions are at the discretion of the Head Coach, and player positions can change throughout the season.
  • If your child makes the team, the MUST attend a MANDATORY Tiger Wear Team fitting which is scheduled for 6:00pm, Tue May 24 at Lion Share Marketing Group, 16610 Bayview Ave, Newmarket.
  • Our season will begin immediately following tryouts with a Parent Meeting during which important information about the upcoming season will be shared in greater detail.  Date and time TBD.

If you have any questions for me, please feel free to email.  If you have a concern, please respect the OMHA protocol of waiting 24-hours before emailing me.  Please know that if I receive a concern prior to this 24-hr period that I will not respond until the protocol period has expired.

Thank you, and good luck to everyone!

Sincerely,

Mike Charendoff

Head Coach – U14 MD
