2019 AE Peewee Tryouts
Hi my name is Mike Lane, and I am thrilled to have both the honour and responsibility of coaching the  Peewee AE team. Thank you for your interest in the team.   As a father who has been through this a few times, I understand tryouts can be a stressful time for both kids and parents. Throughout the process, I am asking all to remain positive and supportive of your child, of other families, the evaluators, and the tryout process.

Important Tryout Information:

Each player, for every tryout they are invited to attend, will be assigned a tryout jersey of a specific colour and number. The jersey must be returned following the completion of each tryout. Please note: goalies are required to bring their own practice jerseys.

Full protective gear is mandatory, including neck and mouth guards – players without such equipment, will not be allowed on the ice.

We appreciate the tryouts are a very anxious time for all involved. It is an extremely difficult task to select players from a large group of hardworking, dedicated athletes. Player selection will be based on each child’s competencies within the following areas:

• Skating         • Puck handling     • Shooting
• Team play     • Hockey sense     • Attentiveness
• Attitude         • Desire/Effort      • Coachability

At this time, I would like to introduce Greg Fenwick as an Assistant Coach. Greg, who has been a part of the coaching staff for the past 3 seasons, will help evaluate throughout the 3 tryouts.

To ensure the selection process is fair, there will be a team of evaluators made up of non-parental resources, assisting in assessing all players. I would ask that you please do not approach evaluators before, during or after tryouts.

Releases after all tryouts will be made via www.auroraminorhockey.com. Your child’s passport submission ID number is the code that identifies your player. After each tryout, please visit the AMHA website to see if your child’s code is on the list of players invited to the next tryout.

Tryout Dates
Thurs. May 2 – 6:30pm-8pm (ACC1)
Sat. May 4 – 11:30am-1pm (ACC1)
Sun. May 5 – 2:15pm-3:45pm (ACC2)

It is important to know that playing rep hockey requires both a large time and financial commitment. This year we will be playing approximately 30 league games plus additional play-off, tournament and exhibition games. The regular ice times have not yet been determined. Each week there will be, on average, two to three practices and one home and one away game. There will also be two to four tournaments (one/two out of town). Budget outlines have not yet been completed, but we expect it will cost approximately ($2000-$2,500) per player for the season.

*In addition to the annual cost, please note, we are in the process of exploring a tournament in the US – which will have a significant increase on the cost.

Parents may be called upon to obtain sponsorship and/or organize fundraising activities, to help offset costs, and to support the team administratively. There will also be a mandatory team dress code for games (shirt, tie, dress pants, dress shoes, Pea Coats).

Once the team is picked, we will have a mandatory fitting day on May 7th, and a parent meeting will be held on a date to be determined.

***NEW THIS YEAR*** (below is directly from the AMHA)

At the coaches meeting for the 2019-2020 season the AMHA and coaches had a lengthy discussion on the topic of “Bubble Calls”. For those of you new to Aurora Minor Hockey, in previous years, the coach of that specific team would contact the family of the player prior to the 3rd tryout who played on the team in the previous season, who is now fighting for a final spot on the current seasons team. Upon discussion, the AMHA has decided that there will be NO “Bubble Calls” to incumbents for the 2019-2020 season. The rationale for this decision is that the AMHA continues to expect us as coaches to select the best skaters and goaltenders to comprise our team. The AMHA will still have independent evaluators which provides consistent discretion on individual talents on each player that are compared to our evaluations. As always, we encourage that you share this information with your child and to make sure that she/he understands that they must always give 100%, at all tryouts, and all season!

It should be clearly understood that if your child should make this team, it will be the coach’s final decision as to the positions they will be playing.

Best of luck to all!
