A hockey multiple choice question for you. Rep hockey is expensive, ruthless, shows poor sportsmanship, bad parent behaviour, or sometimes all of the above. Living in Canada, it's not surprising to have heard it all! But what about leaders...generous... role models...good sports...“winners”?

The young men of Aurora Tigers Minor Midget AA team have shown that and more this season. This was the goal of head coach Glenn Reid and his coaching staff and through the actions of the players this season they delivered.

The team had been involved in many community events such as the Tigers First Shift hockey program and Welcoming Arms, but what soon became the biggest team success story is the welcoming of Newmarket Nighthawks athlete Steven as “assistant Trainer”. Steven plays hockey as a goalkeeper with the Nighthawks program for athletes with special needs. Steven was quickly adopted by the team with his dedication, love of hockey, and infectious personality, and soon became an honorary member on and off the ice. Through their time with Steven, as well as some on ice events with his Nighthawks teammates, the Tigers demonstrated their positive community spirit. This culminated with Steven being given the honour to be the first team rep to hoist this year's YSMHL championship trophy, and not a dry eye in the ACC arena was to be found. These young men have truly come to realize that this season and their future is much more about what they can do for others.

Oh and by the way, the Tigers can now brag about back to back York Simcoe championships and an overall record of 76-33-10 over these 2 years. But something tells me that down the road this team of young men will look much more favourably on all the positive moments they created and experienced off the ice while being great role models in the Aurora community.
