Additional Tips - Waxed vs Non-Waxed laces is a personal preference.  Sometimes waxed laces may be easier to tie up, but more difficult to untie later. - Try to keep the skates laced up through the majority of the eyelets before you put them on and before you start tightening - Tighten/tie your laces before you put on the top half of your hockey equipment, it will be much easier to reach down to your skates - Get the proper length skate laces.  It is not recommended to tie excess laces around the back of the ankle/skate as this restricts the motion of your ankles - if you can’t properly bend your ankles, you can’t properly bend your knees.

Remember, the only way the players will get better at this is through practice!  If your player continues to try and tie their own skates over the summer, they will develop better finger and hand strength and it will get easier over time.

Even the players who currently tie their own skates can get value out of watching the videos and practicing... the better a skate is tied, the less energy is lost from their foot moving around in the skate, ultimately giving them more direct power transfer with each stride.
