Welcome to the 2016/2017 Minor Bantam AA tryouts
Our tryouts will be comprised of three on ice sessions.  There are 17 positions available on this team and no player has a spot that is predetermined or guaranteed therefore all players should assume they are on the bubble and need to bring their best efforts to all tryout sessions.  Please ensure that you come prepared for your session, this includes all equipment and a water bottle.

All on ice sessions are NON BODY CHECKING, as the OMHA requires all coaches and players to participate in a checking clinic prior to initiating this skill set.  The first on ice session (April 25th) will not be attended by incumbent AA players from last season all other candidates will be on the ice.  The first session will focus primarily on skill assessment.  Although not on the ice, all incumbent players will be required to attend the first tryout and participate in an off ice training session.  The second session (April 27th) will have all incumbent candidates, together with those candidates asked to return from the first session on the ice.  The second session will primarily focus on team play with the majority of the time spent in a scrimmage.  The final session (April 29th) will be an exhibition game.  All players attending the exhibition game will adhere to the AMHA dress code with the exception of the team jacket.  I will have several experienced coaches acting as evaluators.  I will use their opinions together with my own to make my selections.

After each session a list of passport numbers will be posted on our team webpage.  These numbers will indicate which players are being asked to return, those not listed will have been released to the Minor Bantam A team or in the case of NRP candidates, to their association of origin.  I will post these numbers on our team webpage no earlier than 4pm the following day.   If your child has been released and you would like to discuss this, please observe the 24 hour rule before this conversation occurs.

Now that we are playing Minor Bantam hockey the AMHA expects our players to adhere to our dress code which is a shirt, tie, black slacks, black dress shoes, team jacket. Our Tigerware fitting day will be on Wednesday May 25th at 8:30pm details will follow final selections.  We can expect our team budget to be approximately $2200 per player.  We will arrange fundraising to help offset this cost.  Our season begins approximately the day after Labour Day with our regular season games starting mid September.  We can expect to participate in 2-3 tournaments.  I have put together a proposed trip to Europe after Christmas returning after New Years.  We will fundraise separately for this trip.  For all players selected, there will be a mandatory parent meeting on April 30th, to discuss this team adventure.  As in past years, you can expect to have 1-2 practices per week and 1-2 games per week.  Our playoffs begin mid January through the end of March.  I expect our team to compete and all players to be present to the end of these playoffs with the ultimate goal of winning an OMHA Championship.

My coaching philosophy is based around discipline.  Self discipline and team discipline.  I expect my players to show hard work on the ice and off the ice.  I will expect my players to be accountable for their behavior, actions, attitude, effort and play.  I am a passionate coach that cheers the success of my team, using good efforts as examples to the other team members of what is expected.  I will have occasion to reprimand players for undisciplined plays, undisciplined penalties, selfish plays, lack of effort and poor behavior.  I do not punish mistakes, I tell my players, “it is not the mistake but what you do after that matters.”  I will discuss errors made by players during a game on the bench and there may be occasions where these discussions will be animated but I will always tap them on the head and tell them lets go.

My players and bench staff will not use profane language.  There will be no discussion of ice time, line combinations or special teams participation.  There will be times when a player will be asked to play different positions or roles they have not filled previously in their hockey career.  I will decide what position a player plays based upon the needs of the team.  I expect all players to do what is asked of them to help our team win.  I tend to roll my lines and attempt to give equitable ice time to all players but equitable does not mean equal. There may be times that I will select players to get extra ice time when we are trying to win.  These occasions will primarily be late in games, especially in a tournament or playoff games. Decisions regarding these situations will be at the discretion of the coaching staff.  I will provide our players and parents with our team rules at our first team meeting, with expected discipline for breaking our rules.  Both players and parents will be expected to sign a “Code of Conduct” agreement.  If you do not want your son or yourself to be held to these standards perhaps this may not be the team for you. Feel free to approach me to discuss if needed.

I wish all candidates the best of luck in their tryouts.  Bring your best effort and show all the coaches what kind of player you are and can be.  Go Tigers Go!
