Welcome to the 2015-16 Tryouts
Thank you for attending the Peewee A tryouts.

My name is Drew Reeves and I’m excited to be the head coach of this team for the 2015/2016 season.

There will be a total of (4) tryout sessions.

Please read below for important information regarding these tryouts

Tryout Sessions

Friday May 1st 8:15-9:45 ACC1

Saturday May 2nd 3:30- 5:00 ACC1

Sunday May 3rd 3:30-5:30 ACC2 Exhibition Games Vs Whitby

Monday May 4th 6:15-7:45 ACC2

When player check in before each tryout they will be assigned a tryout jersey colour and number. Jersey must be handed in to coach following completion of each tryout.   Kindly note that full protective gear is mandatory, including neck and mouth guards – players without, or missing such equipment, will not be allowed on the ice.

To ensure the selection process is fair, there will be a team of evaluators assisting me in assessing the players. Please do not approach evaluators.   Releases after the first & second tryouts will be made by the head coach via the AMHA Website.  Each player will be assigned a unique number at sign-in. Players are to refer to the AMHA website following the tryout. If your number is listed you have been invited to return to the next tryout. After the final tryout, the results of those that have been selected for the team will be listed the next day on May 5th. A parent meeting for those selected to the team will be scheduled at a later date. The head coach will be available for additional feedback for released players, if requested, no sooner than 48 hours after the final tryout date.

Coaching philosophy

When it comes to hockey, my philosophy is to create a fun environment where players want to develop their hockey skills, strengthen their characters, and love the game of hockey.  I will create this environment by sharing positive feedback, celebrating and recognizing success and offering fair playing time.  Our practices will consist of skill development, hockey instruction, team building and FUN!

Tryout evaluations

During the tryout process, independent evaluators and I will assess players based on:

  • Basic technical skills such as puck handling, skating, shooting and passing
  • Hockey knowledge (reading and reacting to the play)
  • Willingness to be involved in the play (desire to compete and fore/back checking skills)
  • Positional play
  • Coach-ability and attitude
  • Goaltenders: read, react, recover, and strong positional play

Team commitment

I plan to roster 15 skaters and 2 goaltenders.  I will ask all successful players and their families to commit to our team both on and off the ice. Rep hockey is very time consuming and requires a strong commitment.  The team can count on playing during March break in 2016 as many rep teams were in their semi-final playoffs during the 2016 March break.  Please expect there to be anywhere between 3-5 ice times a week.

I estimate the team budget to be in the $34,000 range resulting in approximately $2,000 for each family.  These costs are over and above the AMHA registration costs that you have already paid.  We will undertake further obligations from families regarding team fundraising initiatives and corporate sponsorships to keep costs in check.  My plan is to participate in 3-4 tournaments over the season.  This would include at least one overnight tournament (depending upon parent input). There will also be a mandatory team dress code for games.

My personal approach for the upcoming season will be one that places the players’ enjoyment above all. While doing this, I will strive to improve their skill and knowledge of the game with the emphasis on building a healthy team atmosphere.

Note:

There will be a mandatory jersey sizing on - Saturday May 9 - 12 pm - 4 pm for all successful Peewee A players at the ACC 2.

There will be a mandatory Tigerware fitting day on - Saturday June 20 – 11:30 am - 4 pm There will be a bbq and activities ,  More details to follow.

Thank you once again for attending the Peewee A tryouts. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding any of the information outlined in this letter,

Sincerely,

Drew Reeves
